THE COPS
Get Good Or Stay Bad

Seattle's the Cops may have been founded on John Randolph and Mike Jaworski of Hello From Waveland, and ex-Kinski co-founder David Weeks, but it undoubtedly was not truly born until they recruited Brian Wall. Who is Brian Wall? Nobody ... except the kid who used to drop acid and run around in an ape suit at Raft Of Dead Monkeys shows back in their prime! He's playing bass or something, and the band almost immediately took over the vacancy Raft left in Seattle for a truly bombastic rock act.

A better live band, Get Good Or Stay Bad is still a damn notable full-length debut (earlier last year the band put out an EP called Why Kids Go Wrong). The drummer needs to hit harder or move the mics closer, and there are some lag moments, but overall these kids have managed to translate their influences (Buzzcocks, Gang of Four, the Clash, Kinks, Richard Hell) into something international, something risky with genuine energy. Pick up the recs on sale, and don't miss the Cops on stage.
