Ben Gibbard On "Passenger's Seat"

"'Passenger's Seat' was written, and as I say this it sounds a little gaggy, but it was written in late September of 2001. I think I just wanted to create a more carefree, intimate moment in a song, especially because of everything that was happening around us at that time. That kind of sense that there's moments in life ... they make every problem disappear for a split second. I think at that time I really needed that."

On "I Will Follow You Into The Dark"

"'I Will Follow You Into The Dark' is one of the best songs I've written, probably in the top three. When putting it together, we were like, 'We've got all these songs, let's not overthink it, let's just make the record. We're not going to live in fear of critics anymore, we've sold too many records to care what indie rockers think, and people have even made their minds up about this record before they've even heard it. So, we're just going to make it.' And for every person who loves it there's the old fan who's saying, 'They're old shit is better.' Not to name drop, but I was talking to Mike Mills from REM, and he says people still come up to him and say that 'Murmur' is the only good thing they ever did. Those people are always going to be there."

On Current Projects

"Right now I'm working on a soundtrack with Steve Fisk, produced by AJ Schnack (who made the critically lauded They Might Be Giants documentary Gigantic), who's working on a movie about Kurt Cobain based on all the tapes he made with Michael Azerrad for the Come As You Are book. It's 24 hours of tapes condensed down to three acts: Aberdeen, Olympia, and Seattle. With Kurt just talking about it. Right now and before we leave for Europe I'm basically living over at Steve's house composing the music for this thing. That's been my main focus towards the tour, I haven't even picked up a pen to write Deathcab songs."

On A Postal Service Follow-Up (which at last count sound-scanned over 800,000 for Sub Pop)

"Jimmy (Tamborello) of the Postal Service is working on two other albums, and I wouldn't even have time to start working on it if he sent it to me anyways."
